Dove (you know, the soap company) did that big campaign not too long ago with the tag-line “Campaign For Real Beauty”. The accompanying video (this one) is a really interesting watch.
I’m not a lady so I can’t truly say that I understand the pressure heaped upon me by adverts and magazines with women who appear to be absolutely perfect. I can however say, with authority, that no woman is perfect – even models – and we all need a little help from the magic tools that Photoshop provides.

My sister-in-law, Janet, designs the most beautiful jewellery and wanted some photos to show the pieces off. I’ve never really done much product-photography before but these came out well, I thought.
All were taken with a 5DmkII + 24-105 and the pieces were placed on a sheet of glass with wallpaper underneath the glass. They were lit using a 43″ umbrella to camera-right and a plain white reflector to camera-left. I found that if you moved the reflector, depending on the piece, you could easily modify the highlights.

Hi, Thanks, I’ll try that in future! Matt
Hi
With shots on a glass plate to get a reflection, black paper or felt gives a really deep shine. I found my eye being drawn to the (albeit subtle) pattern.
Chris
Some very nice images here Matt, having shot Jewellery myself I know it’s not and easy subject! Cheers Neil
